About the Mridang textbook

Mridang is the Class 1 English textbook introduced by NCERT after the National Education Policy 2020, and it takes the place of the earlier book called Marigold. The aim is foundational literacy through stories, rhymes and pictures instead of formal grammar, so the book looks and feels like a picture book. The file offered here is the complete book, a download of roughly 33.4 MB.

The book is arranged into four themed units and nine chapters in all.

Unit 1: My Family and Me 2. Greetings
Unit 2: Life Around Us 3. Picture Time
Unit 2: Life Around Us 4. The Cap-seller and the Monkeys
Unit 2: Life Around Us 5. A Farm
Unit 3: Food 6. Fun with Pictures
Unit 3: Food 7. The Food We Eat
Unit 4: Seasons 8. The Four Seasons
Unit 4: Seasons 9. Anandi’s Rainbow

Who it is for and how to use it

The book is meant for children in Class 1, but the person reading it first is usually a parent or teacher. At this age the best method is shared reading rather than self-study.

  • Read each rhyme aloud twice, letting the child join in with the rhythm.
  • Ask the child to point to objects on the page and name them, which builds vocabulary without pressure.
  • Link the unit theme to daily life: talk about family when reading Unit 1, about food at mealtime, and about the weather in Unit 4.
  • Keep sessions short, ten to fifteen minutes, and end with a story the child enjoys.

Where it sits in the curriculum

Within the primary years, the English book at this level concentrates on listening, speaking, early reading and picture-based comprehension. Chapter-wise solutions for the book are also provided by the source site, but at Class 1 they are mainly useful for parents who want to see sample answers to picture and oral activities. Check with your child’s school whether it follows the current NCERT syllabus before buying supplementary books.

Printed books

A printed textbook is far better for a six-year-old than a screen, and Competer stocks printed school books and workbooks that you can browse by class.
