What the Compass series does
Compass is the compilation that Rau’s IAS brings out for Prelims candidates, splitting its coverage into subject volumes so that each can be read on its own. This volume gathers the history portion for the 2025 attempt. History in the Preliminary paper spans ancient, medieval and modern India along with art and culture, and questions often reward precise recall of dates, personalities, movements and cultural features. A 95-page volume suggests a condensed treatment, so treat it as a revision layer on top of your core reading.
Using it well
- Keep your NCERT or standard-book notes beside it and tick topics that appear in both.
- Read one era per day and write five self-made questions at the end of each.
- Return to the PDF in the final two weeks and read only the parts you marked as weak.
Link to the syllabus
The Prelims syllabus names the history of India and the Indian national movement as a distinct heading. A compilation like this is most helpful where recent developments, such as exhibitions, discoveries, anniversaries and heritage recognitions, connect to the static syllabus. Those connections are what the paper tends to test in factual form.
A sample revision calendar
Spread across three weeks, the volume can be handled without stress. In the first week, cover the ancient and early medieval material and finish with a timeline of dynasties. In the second week, take medieval and modern topics, building a chart of movements, leaders and reforms. In the third week, return to art, culture and the topical items that the volume links to the syllabus. Keep a short list of confusing pairs, for example two similar rulers or two similar reform bodies, and read that list daily. This calendar assumes you have studied the basics already; if not, extend it by using a standard book first, and treat this volume as the closing layer.
Preparing on paper
Many candidates retain history better from printed pages that they can annotate with dates and timelines. Competer offers printed UPSC study material, so check the related items on this page if you would like a physical copy to carry through your revision cycles.
