Stages at a glance
Recruitment under CEN 06/2025 (Graduate posts) and CEN 07/2025 (Undergraduate posts) moves through two computer-based tests and then a step that depends on the post you chose. This page lays out each stage in plain words so that your preparation follows the actual marks and not hearsay.
| Stage | Questions | Marks | Time |
|---|---|---|---|
| CBT-1 | 100 | 100 | 90 minutes |
| CBT-2 | 120 | 120 | 90 minutes |
Candidates who qualify for a scribe get 120 minutes in either test. Both papers are objective and online.
Section split inside each paper
- CBT-1: General Awareness 40, Mathematics 30, General Intelligence and Reasoning 30.
- CBT-2: General Awareness 50, Mathematics 35, General Intelligence and Reasoning 35.
- Every right answer earns one mark and every wrong answer costs one third of a mark.
The notice calls the section split indicative, so a paper may deviate slightly. The same pattern applies to Graduate and Undergraduate posts.
How CBT-1 screens candidates
The first test is purely a filter. Marks are normalized when it runs in several shifts, and roughly fifteen times the community-wise vacancies of each board move on to CBT-2. Minimum eligibility marks are 40 percent for UR and EWS, 30 percent for OBC (NCL) and SC, and 25 percent for ST, with a possible two-mark relaxation for PwBD candidates when their numbers fall short. Calculators and electronic devices are not permitted.
What follows CBT-2
- Posts with no skill test: normalized CBT-2 marks decide who is called for document verification.
- Station Master and Traffic Assistant: about eight times the vacancies are called for the aptitude battery (CBAT). A T-score of at least 42 in every battery is needed, there is no negative marking, and final merit gives 70 percent weight to CBT-2 and 30 percent to CBAT.
- Typist posts: a qualifying typing test at 30 words per minute in English or 25 in Hindi, with no spell check. Its marks are not added to merit.
- Document verification and medical: candidates equal to the vacancies are called one for one, with the older candidate placed higher on a tie.
How to use this page while preparing
Because a wrong answer costs a third of a mark, practise accuracy before speed: attempt only what you can defend. Time yourself at under a minute per question in CBT-1 and keep a separate log for each of the three sections. Aspirants for Station Master should rehearse aptitude batteries early, since the notice only points to the testing directorate for their format.
The attached notices
The eight PDFs are official board notices for CEN 06/2025: a corrigendum on revised application dates, a set of FAQs, an application status notice, CBT-1 and CBT-2 schedule notices, answer key and objection notices, and the CBT-1 result with cut-off. Read them alongside the table above to confirm the details that matter for your region.
Printed material
If you prefer practising on paper, Competer stocks printed railway exam material, so you can solve timed sets with a pen and review mistakes without a screen.
