What is inside

Reading the pattern before the syllabus

Madhyamik is the West Bengal Class 10 board exam, and every compulsory subject follows the same frame: a 90-mark written paper plus 10 marks of internal assessment from the school. The sitting is 3 hours 15 minutes, and the first fifteen minutes are reserved for reading the paper. The board’s pattern sets marks only and does not mention negative marking. The board calls the pattern indicative, so small changes in a real paper are possible.

Subject by subject

Subject Structure of the 90 marks
First Language Bengali 47 questions: MCQ 17, very short 19, short 6, essay type 29, writing 19
Second Language English MCQ 18, very short 18, short 24, three long writing tasks of 10 each
Mathematics MCQ 6, fill-in-the-blanks 5, true or false 5, short 20, long answers 54
Physical Science Group A 15, Group B 21, Group C 18, Group D 36
Life Science Group A 15, Group B 21, Group C 24, Group D 30
History Groups A to E: 20, 16, 22, 24 and 8 marks

Geography follows a similar grouped design, and the PDF listed below has the complete geography breakdown.

Details that change how you study

  • In Bengali, grammar carries 16 marks, so eight MCQs and eight short answers can be won with steady practice.
  • In Mathematics, geometry holds the biggest share of long-answer marks, followed by algebra.
  • In Physical Science, the paper splits into a common area, physics and chemistry portions.
  • In Life Science, the Environment and its resources chapter carries the heaviest weight.
  • In History, every pair of chapters must be touched in the analytical group.

How to use it

Print the table for the subject you fear most and tick off each section after a timed attempt. Spend your first week learning which questions are compulsory and which allow choices; that knowledge alone saves minutes in the hall. The pass mark is not stated in a public notice, so confirm it with your school.

Choices inside the papers

Several papers allow you to skip part of a section. In Life Science, for example, the short-answer group lets you answer twelve of seventeen, and in History the explanatory group asks for one of three. Learning which groups carry choice and which are compulsory is as valuable as knowing the topics, because it tells you where to spend revision time and where an unlucky gap can be covered.

Practice on paper

School-level practice books and board-style question sets for Class 10 are stocked in the Competer school section if you want printed revision beside the official PDF.
