What is inside

Every Civil Services Mains candidate has to write a paper in one Indian language from the Eighth Schedule, and Telugu is among the choices. The paper is qualifying in character, meaning candidates must reach the required standard but the marks do not add to the rank. This page holds the Telugu version across ten sittings.

The ten sittings

  • 2025 and 2024
  • 2023 and 2022
  • 2020 and 2019
  • 2016
  • 2014 and 2013
  • 2011

Those are the years the archive carries. It has nothing for 2012, 2015, 2017, 2018 or 2021, so a few gaps remain between the earlier and later papers.

Files and years

The series has three PDFs attached, around 0.2 MB, 2.0 MB and 0.2 MB. Because ten listings share three files, you cannot assume one year per file. Open each, read the year and any headings at the top, and write that on your own copy before starting.

Readers it suits

Candidates from Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, those who learned Telugu as a second language and mean to use it for the qualifying test, and mentors who run language clinics. Anyone worried about passing the paper while concentrating on General Studies and the optional will also benefit.

Using the papers in a weekly plan

A qualifying paper should take little of your time, but it cannot be ignored. One approach is to give it a single session every week.

  1. Week one: read and attempt the comprehension passages from the larger file.
  2. Week two: practise the essay and the letter or report format.
  3. Week three: translation both ways, with strict checking of vocabulary.
  4. Week four: attempt a full paper in the time allowed.

What such a paper normally tests

Comprehension of a passage, precis writing, usage and grammar, translation between the language and English, and short compositions are the usual components. Telugu has its own conventions for formal writing, so review the style of address and closing lines used in the sample papers.

Tips for the exam hall

Plan the essay on rough paper first and write a clear opening and close. Do not leave the translation parts blank, because partial credit is usually available. Reread your script for spelling and agreement slips before submitting, as small mistakes add up in a short paper.

Caveats

The files give questions without answers or marking notes. The commission’s first web links have stopped working, and the archived PDFs fill that gap.

For hard copies

Competer sells printed UPSC question collections and study material that candidates can order for offline practice.
