About Mains 365

Mains 365 is a Vision IAS series that takes a year of current affairs and recasts it as material for the Mains papers, subject by subject. The Ethics edition for 2024 is a 73-page English PDF aimed at General Studies Paper 4.

How it differs from a plain current affairs magazine

An ordinary current affairs issue records events. A Mains 365 booklet reorganises them under syllabus headings, so what you read can go directly into an answer. For Ethics that means examples of integrity, accountability, dilemmas in public life and values in governance that you can cite in case studies and theory answers.

Using the booklet

• Maintain a notebook of ready-to-use examples sorted by value, such as courage, empathy or objectivity.
• For case studies, extract the decision-making method shown, not only the incident.
• Do not stuff an answer with examples; one strong example beats five weak ones.

Syllabus fit

It supports the Paper 4 topics of human values, public administration ethics, probity, civil service values and the dilemmas faced in public and private relationships. You still need a foundational book for concepts and thinkers.

Points to note

The examples come from the 2024 cycle, so they are strongest for candidates writing around that period. Revisit the content later, because fresh incidents and reports will replace older ones in your examples bank.

Example bank method

Open a spreadsheet or notebook with columns for value, example, source and answer use. Each time the booklet describes a conduct, a policy or a dilemma, add one row. By the end you will hold a few dozen entries that you can slot into answers on honesty, compassion, courage or accountability. Revisit the sheet monthly and delete weak entries. Fewer well-chosen examples always read better than a long list that the examiner has seen in many scripts.
